Located in Northern San Luis Obispo County, California, Hazard Canyon is an excellent right-hand reef set-up that offers up some gnarly barrels when the conditions line up. The waves here are heavy, the locals as well, and break for up to 200 meters over a rocky reef. The wave is ledgy, boiling, and throws hard, this is not a spot for the inexperienced. Don’t park where the locals park or your car will get messed up.
What are the best surf conditions for Hazard Canyon?
Gets good between head high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard here when smaller then a step-up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for advanced-level surfers. The surf here is not the most consistent (4/10) and won’t be too busy but the locals are scary (5/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the Northwest. Works on a mid to low tide.
We recommend wearing a 4/3 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 15 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temperatures drop to 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
