Located in San Luis Obispo County, California, Spooners Cove is a good left-hand big wave spot that offers up large walls of water up to 20 foot plus. This wave is no joke to surf and breaks for up to 200 meters over a rock bottom. Consequences here are grave, do not surf here if you are not an experienced big wave rider. Big barrels have been seen here, but it takes a lot of skill to do this. If you wipe out on take-off and end up on the cliffs, you’ll have to ditch your board and climb up, do not attempt to paddle back out. This spot is still pretty unknown thankfully, I wouldn’t take pics or bring more than one friend if you aren’t from here.
What are the best surf conditions for Spooner’s Cove?
Gets good between triple overhead to tow-in size. We recommend riding a rhino chaser or gun, the shortest we’ve seen anyone ride out here is 8’6″. This break is suitable for advanced-level surfers only. The surf here does not break very often (3/10) and won’t be too crowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are big and from the Northwest. Works on a mid to low-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 4/3 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 15 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temperatures drop to 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
