Located in San Luis Obispo county in Central California, Morro Bay is a fun beach break. The waves here can be challenging and break for up to 50 meters over a sand bottom providing sections for turns and hacks as well as the occasional barrel.
What are the best surf conditions for Morro Bay?
Gets good between waist high and triple overhead. We recommend a shortboard here when it is big, but a longboard will work when it is smaller. Morro Bay can have something for all levels of surfers depending on the swell. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10), but there is a local crew (6/10). Luckily there are so many peaks along the massive beach that crowds should never be a problem. The best winds are offshore from the East. The best swells come from the West, North, Northwest, South, and Southwest. The best tide depends on the sandbars, but it can work on any tide.
We recommend a 4/3 in the summer here as water temps rise to 15 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is recommended as water temps drop to around 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
