Located on the Garden Route, South Africa, Wilderness Beach is a fun beach-break with a couple of river mouths that offer up some groomed peaks with rippable walls. The waves here can be challenging to surf and break for up to 100 meters (328 ft) over a rock and sand bottom. This spot is sharky.
What are the best surf conditions for Wilderness Beach?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is good for all levels of surfer. The surf here is very consistent (8/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the north. The best swells are from the south. Works on a mid to low tide.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in summer when water temperatures rise to 20°C (68°F). In the winter a 3/2 might be best as temps drop to about 17°C (62.6°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
