Located on the Garden Route in South Africa, Swartvlei Beach is a fun and long stretch of beach that puts up some good barreling peaks as well as a longer left point and a good river mouth right. The waves here are challenging to surf and break for up to 50 metres (164 ft) over a sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Swartvlei Beach?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller, a shortboard, and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfers. The surf here is super consistent (9/10) and will generally be uncrowded when good (3/10). The best winds are from the north. The best swells are from the south, southeast, and southwest. Works best on a low to mid-tide.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in summer when water temperatures rise to 20°C (68°F). In the winter, a 3/2 might be best as temperatures drop to about 17°C (62.6°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
