Located on the Garden Route in South Africa, Plettenberg Bay is a fun stretch of beach break that offers up some rippable walls more often than not. The waves here are challenging to surf and break for up to 50 meters (164 feet) over a sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Plettenberg Bay?
It gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is good for all levels of surfer depending on the size. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the East, South, or Southeast. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in summer when water temperatures rise to 20°C (68°F). In the winter, a 3/2 might be best as temps drop to about 17°C (63°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
