Located on the Garden Route in South Africa, The Wedge is a fun little wedge setup, similar to the one in Newport, but a left. Big barrels are on offer here when the swell is on. The waves here are heavy and break for up to 50 metres (164 ft) over a shallow sand bottom. It needs a rare east swell to rebound correctly off the rocks.
What are the best surf conditions for The Wedge?
Gets good between overhead and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or step-up here. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is not the most consistent (4/10) and will generally have a crew on it (7/10). The best winds are from the west. The best swells are from the east and southeast. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in summer when water temperatures rise to 20°C (68°F). In winter, a 3/2 might be best as temperatures drop to about 17°C (62.6°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
