Located on the Garden Route in South Africa, The Heads is a quality A-frame reef that offers up powerful walls and deep barrels in both directions. Make sure you know which way the tide is moving before you paddle out. The waves here are challenging and the lineup is difficult to navigate, breaking for up to 150 meters (492 ft) over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Outer Pool?
Gets good between chest high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the north. The best swells are from the south and southeast. Works best on a low to mid-tide.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in summer when water temperatures rise to 20°C (68°F). In the winter, a 3/2 might be best as temps drop to about 17°C (62.6°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
