Located on the Garden Route in South Africa, Mossel Bay is a fun right-hand double point break that offers up a barreling peak on the outside, Outer Pool, and a mellower peak on the inside, Inner Pool. The waves here are challenging on the outside and easier on the inside, breaking for up to 250 meters (820 feet) over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Mossel Bay?
It gets good between waist-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally have a crew (6/10). The best winds are from the West. The best swells are from the South, Southeast, and Southwest. It works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in summer when water temperatures rise to 20°C (68°F). In the winter, a 3/2 might be best as temps drop to about 17°C (63°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
