Located in Northwest Maui, Rainbows is a fun, peaky reef break that offers up both lefts and rights good for performance surfing. On certain North swells the right can barrel. The waves here require a bit of skill to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a coral reef. Swells need a lot of North or South in them to get in through the surrounding islands.
What are the best surf conditions for Rainbows?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or a step-up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is not the most consistent (4/10) and will get very crowded due to the resort nearby (8/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the North or South. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year-round. Water temperatures range between 27 and 24. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
