Located on Northwest Maui, Honokahau is a quality right-hand reef break that offers up a changeable but rippable wave perfect for linking together sections and turns. This wave isn’t perfect, but can offer relief from the crowds elsewhere. The waves here are challenging at times and break for up to 100 meters over a rocky bottom. There can also be lefts on the Southern side of the bay, but these are generally of lesser quality than the rights.
What are the best surf conditions for Honokahau?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. A shortboard then a step-up is the move as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here usually has something to ride (5/10) and will get busy at times, but nowhere near as Honolua Bay (5/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the North, Northeast, and Northwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round here. Water temperatures don’t fall below 24 and range as high as 27. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
