Located in the North-West of Maui, Hookipa is an excellent reef break with a coral reef bottom. The waves here require a some surf skill and can break for up to 200 meters, providing fun sections for manoeuvres. Is often super windy with a cross-shore wind but when the wind is light it turns on.
Gets good between double to triple overhead plus. We recommend riding your standard shortboard or step-up when bigger here. Hookipa is best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and can get insanely crowded (10/10). The best winds for Hookipa are Southeast. The best swell direction is from the East, North, Northeast and Northwest.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini, plus a wetsuit top in More...
