Located in Northwest Maui, Ma’alaea Bay is an excellent reef break known to be one of the best on the island in summer swells. This reef break offers up an ultra-fast right-hander that will need a few speed pumps in order to make the sections. The waves here can be tricky to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a coral reef. The biggest hazard here is the crowd.
What are the best surf conditions for Ma’alaea Bay?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or a step-up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent in summer (6/10) and will get insanely crowded (10/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on a mid to high tide best.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round as water temperatures range between 27 and 24. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
