Located in Minho-Douro, Portugal, Viana do Castelo is a fun beach break that offers up some good performance-based peaks when there is a big NW in the water. The waves here are easy to surf and break for up to 50 meters over a sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Viana do Castelo?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard when the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is not consistent (3/10) and will usually have a crowd on it (8/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Northwest, South, Southwest, and West. Works on low to mid tides best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 18 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temps drop to 13 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
