Located in Rivas Province, Nicaragua, Popoyo is an excellent duo of reef breaks that offer up different flavours of A-frames. The inside reef is perfect for performance surfing, peeling predictably and perfectly. The outside reef is a gnarly, big, powerful barrel reserved for advanced surfers only. The waves here can be a bit challenging and break for up to 100 meters over rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Popoyo?
Gets good between waist-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard, shortboard, step-up, or rhino chaser depending on what break and size you are surfing. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and it can get very crowded (8/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. The inside peak works on low to mid tide and the outside works on high tide.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round as water temperatures range between 29 and 27 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
