Located in Rivas Province, Nicaragua, El Astillero is a quality left-hand reef break that offers up powerful walls perfect for perfecting a big carve game. It can also get quite hollow. The waves here are challenging to surf and break for up to 200 meters over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for El Astillero?
Gets good between waist-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent (6/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round as water temperatures range between 29 and 27 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
