Located on the West Coast of South Africa, Garbage Dump is a set of point breaks. The right is fatter and mellow while the left is more high-performance. Both peaks are challenging to surf due to the immense amounts of kelp in the lineup. The waves break for up to 200 meters (656 feet) over a rock bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Garbage Dump?
Garbage Dump gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent (5/10) and will get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Southwest. The right works on all tides, and the left is best on low to mid tides.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
