Located in the West Coast District of South Africa, Cape St. Martin Reef is a fun left-hand reef barrel that picks up a good amount of swell. The waves here are not easy to surf or locate and break for up to 300 meters (984 ft) over a rock bottom. The reef is filled with kelp which keeps the conditions glassy a bit.
What are the best surf conditions for Cape St. Martin Reef?
Gets good between chest-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (8/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in summers when water temperatures rise to 18°C (64.4°F). In the winter, a 4/3 might be best as temps drop to about 15°C (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
