Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, Waipio Bay is a fun stretch of barreling, heavy beach break that offers up some powerful waves when the conditions line up. The waves here are challenging and break for up to 100 meters over a sand and rock bottom. You’ll need 4WD or hiking shoes to get in. The valley is often called The Valley of Kings as it was home to many old Hawaiian rulers. The best sandbars are usually at the river mouth.
What are the best surf conditions for Waipio Bay?
Gets good between chest high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the South. The best swells are from the North and Northwest. Works on a mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round as water temperatures range between 27 ad 24. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
