Located on the Big Island in Hawaii, Pohoiki is a quality reef break that offers up both rights and lefts perfect for performance surfing (it can also get hollow at times). The waves here can be a little challenging to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a coral reef. There is also an inside break perfect for beginners and a further outside reef that is really a big wave spot for advanced and experienced surfers. The active lava flow has changed the bathymetry over the years, creating and erasing several breaks.
What are the best surf conditions for Pohoiki?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will get busy at times (5/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the South, Southeast, and Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round here. Water temperatures range from 27 to 24. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
