Located in Rhode Island on an island off the coast, Block Island is a quality point break that peels across a rock and sand bottom. The waves here require a bit of skill to surf well, and the lineup can be a bit hairy with locals. The point breaks for 300 meters providing some great sections for manoeuvres as well as the occasional barrel.
What are the best surf conditions for Block Island?
Gets good from chest high to double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard when smaller and a shortboard when the size picks up. The break is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here does not break often (3/10) and is generally uncrowded but the locals have been known to get physical with outsiders (6/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. Needs a particular swell angle to work, South or Southeast is good. Works best on Low to mid tides.
We recommend wearing a spring suit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 21 degrees. In winter we recommend wearing a 5/4 wetsuit with temps dropping all the way to 1 degree. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
