Located in the Guanacaste Province, close to Tamarindo, Costa Rica, Playa Grande is a fun stretch of beach break that offers up some fun waves for all levels. The waves here can be a bit challenging depending on the size and break for up to 100 meters over a sand bottom. This is a famous turtle breeding ground, and you’ll probably see some in the water.
What are the best surf conditions for Playa Grande?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard if smaller and a shortboard or step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will usually have a crew on it (7/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Northwest, West, or Southwest. Works on a mid to high tide best.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year-round. Water temperatures range between 29 and 27. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
