Located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Avellana is a quality right-hand reef break that offers up some powerful waves and holds size well. The waves here are heavy and break for up to 100 meters over a rocky bottom. There are a couple of other reefs and a river mouth that all hold good size and shape.
What are the best surf conditions for Avellana?
Gets good between waist-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or a step-up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will always have a crew (7/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the Northwest, Southwest, and West. Works on a mid to high tide best.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round. Water temperatures range between 29 and 27. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
