Located in Golfo de Nicoya, Costa Rica, just South of Jaco, Roca Loca is an excellent right-hand reef break that throws up powerful walls of water on the right swells. The waves here are quite heavy and break for up to 100 meters over a rocky reef. The name translates to Crazy Rock, which describes the wave well.
What are the best surf conditions for Roca Loca?
Gets good between chest-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or your step-up when bigger. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here usually has a wave (5/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South, Southwest, and West. Works on a low to mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year round as water temperatures range between 29 and 28. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
