Located in Golfo de Nicoya, Costa Rica, Playa Escondida (Hidden Beach) is a good reef setup that throws up a barreling left and a high-performance right. The waves here are difficult to surf well and break for up to 100 meters over a rock and sand bottom. You’ll need a boat to access or be staying at the resort on the beach.
What are the best surf conditions for Playa Escondida?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or step-up when the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent (6/10) and will always have a crew on it (7/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on a mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year-round. Water temperatures range between 29 and 28. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
