Located in Central Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica, Playa el Rey is a quality beach break that is pretty isolated and offers up good rippable peaks. The waves here can be challenging and break for up to 50 meters over a sand bottom. You can camp but make sure to bring supplies.
What are the best surf conditions for Playa El Rey?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard when smaller and a shortboard or a step-up when the surf is bigger. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is somewhat consistent (6/10) and will be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the Southwest, South, and West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing board shorts or a bikini year-round. Water temperatures range between 29 and 28. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
