Located on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, Spits is a fun left reef break over a rock and sand bottom. Some waves here can be a bit tricky, breaking for up to 100 meters. When it is really good it will be barreling and spitting (hence the name), but more commonly it will be walls and shoulders perfect for turns and snaps.
What are the best surf conditions for Spits?
Gets good between waist high and triple overhead. We recommend a shortboard for surfing here. Spits is best for intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf is pretty consistent here (7/10) and can get busy on weekends and holidays (5/10). The best winds are offshore and East and works on all tides. A swell from the South or Southwest will light the spot up.
In summer a 3/2 is all that is needed with water temperatures hitting 17 degrees in February. In winter the temperatures drop to a brisk 14 degrees, necessitating a 4/3. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
