Located on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, Salmon Hole is a fun, hollow, right point that breaks over a rock bottom. The waves are challenging and sucky breaking for 50 meters. They deliver nice barrels, often more makeable on a bodyboard, but just as fun on a surfboard. It is incredibly scenic here, and there are some other spots in the area making it worth exploring.
What are the best surf conditions for Salmon Hole?
Gets good between waist high and triple overhead. We recommend a shortboard or step up to surf here. Salmon hole is best for intermediate and advanced surfers due to the steep and sucky nature of the wave. The surf here is pretty consistent (5/10), and almost always uncrowded (3/10), The best winds are North, the best tides are mid to low, and the best swells are deep groundswells from the South and Southwest.
A 3/2 is good for summer (although there won’t be much swell) when water temps hold at around 17 degrees in February. In winter a 4/3 is recommended when the temps come down to a frigid 14 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
