Located on the inside of the St. Vincent Gulf, South Australia, Y Steps is a barreling, a-frame beach break that can provide rides up to 50 meters over a sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Y-Steps?
The waves get good between waist high to double overhead, although it needs a massive southwest swell to get that big. We recommend bringing a shortboard, or whatever craft you’d like to be barreled on. At smaller sizes it is suitable for all levels of surfer, but when it gets bigger intermediate and advanced surfers only. It is not a very consistent wave as it does need a large swell to show (4/10), and when it’s on it will be ridiculously crowded due to its proximity to Adelaide (9/10). The best winds are offshore from the Southeast. The best swell directions are from the South and Southwest, preferably massive. The break works best on mid to high tides.
