Located in the West Coast District of South Africa, Port Nolloth Reef is an excellent right-hand reef break that throws out some barrels over a dangerously shallow rock reef. There are lots of sharks around, but it’s usually uncrowded. On bigger swells, it really turns on, and you can get lovely long barrels. The waves here are no joke and break for up to 150 meters (492 ft) over a rock bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Port Nolloth Reef?
Gets good between head high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This spot is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on a mid to high tide only.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in summers when water temperatures rise to 18°C (64.4°F). In the winter, a 4/3 might be best as temps drop to about 15°C (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
