Located on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Outer Kom is an excellent, classic big left-hander that offers up clean, powerful, but shifty walls. When on, this can be one of the best waves in Cape Town, but it’s hard to catch on its day, and then even more difficult to be in the right spot at the right time. The waves here are heavy and break for up to 200 meters (656 feet) over a rock bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Outer Kom?
Outer Kom gets good between chest-high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here does not break often (3/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the Southwest and big. It works best on a low to mid-tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19 degrees Celsius (66°F). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 15 degrees Celsius (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
