Located off the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Dungeons is a legendary big wave spot that offers up challenging right-hand barrels on big swells. Be prepared, both physically and with equipment, for these monster waves. The waves are dangerous, breaking for up to 200 meters (656 feet) over a rocky reef. Be ready for double-ups and big closeouts.
What are the best surf conditions for Dungeons?
It gets good between triple overhead and tow-in size. We recommend riding a big barrel chaser, gun, or tow board. This break is good for advanced surfers only. The surf here is not super consistent (4/10) and will generally be uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the North. The best swells are from the South, Southwest, and West. It works on a mid to low-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19°C (66°F). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 15°C (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
