Located on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Kommetjie features a fun set of two left-hand reef breaks. The inside left is a fun little wall that is good for a couple of whacks. The outside reef is where the big boys surf, delivering powerful barrels when the conditions line up. The waves here require a bit of skill to surf and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Kommetjie?
It gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up here. This break is good for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds are from the Southeast. The best swells are from the South, Southwest, or West. It works best on a low to mid-tide.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19°C (66°F). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 15°C (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
