Located in Oceanside to Encinitas, San Diego County, Pipes is a quality selection of reef breaks that offer up both rippable and hollow sections for shortboard and mellow peaks for longboarders. The waves here can be a bit tricky to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a rock and sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Pipes?
Gets good between waist-high and double overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here usually has something to ride (5/10) and will generally be insanely crowded (10/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the Northwest or Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer here when water temperatures rise to 20 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temperatures drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
