In between Carlsbad and Leucadia in Southern California, Ponto is not a bad beach break that breaks over a sand bottom. The waves here can be a bit tricky at times, breaking for up to 50 meters providing some fun sections for turns and airs. If the swell and sand is right, check both sides of the jetties, there might be something good there.
What are the best surf conditions for Ponto?
Gets good between waist high and double overhead. A shortboard is the go to here as the waves are generally pretty steep. Ponto will accommodate all levels of surfers, depending on the size of the swell. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and can have a crew (6/10). Offshore winds are from the East. Picks up swell from the Northwest, South, Southwest, and West. The best tide depends on the sandbars, but it can work at any level.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer here when water temps rise to 20 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temps drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
