Located in Oceanside to Encinitas, San Diego County, Moonlight Beach is a peaky beachie that offers up some good sections for manoeuvres when the conditions line up. The waves here are pretty easy to surf and break for up to 100 meters over a sand bottom. Lifeguards will restrict surfing during the afternoons in summer as this beach gets hyper-crowded with families.
What are the best surf conditions for Moonlight Beach?
Gets good between waist-high and overhead. We recommend riding a longboard here when smaller and a shortboard as the size picks up. This break is suitable for all levels of surfer. The surf here is somewhat consistent (5/10) and will get very crowded (8/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the Southwest, small and clean. Works on a mid-tide best.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer here when water temperatures rise to 20 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is best when water temperatures drop to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
