Located in the Encinitas area in San Diego County, Southern California, Swamis is an incredible reef break that peels across a rock bottom. This wave is a regional classic, renowned for its shape and its ability to handle large swells. The waves here can be a bit heavy, and break for up to 100 meters serving up thick walls for your inner Taylor Knox. The walls can also be hollow, setting up great barrels, especially on lower tides.
What are the best surf conditions for Swamis?
Starts working at around waist high and holds size up to triple overhead. This is a performance wave, ride a shortboard or a step up. This wave is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The reef is quite consistent (7/10) and always insanely crowded (10/10). Offshore winds come from the East. The best swells are from the Northwest and West in wintertime. Works on all tides, the lower the hollower.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to around 20 degrees. In the winter a 4/3 is the move when water temps plunge to 15 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
