Right next to Geelong lies the bustling surf break of Jan Juc. This sandy beach break is of average quality and can have waves up to 50 meters, providing softer waves suitable for larger amounts of foam underfoot. However, on the right day, it can appeal to the advanced short boarder.
What are the best surf conditions for Jan Juc?
The best size is between wast high and double overhead, anything more and the banks begin to lose shape. Depending on the size, we recommend riding a longboard, shortboard, or step up when bigger. Jan Juc is suitable for all surfers, but usually best for beginners. There is almost always a wave to surf here (8/10) but can get very crowded on weekends and during the summer holidays (8/10). Come here when the swell is too small for the reefs, there will be a wave breaking. The best tides to surf are lower to medium. Jan Juc likes a Northwest wind, and any swell from the South, Southeast, or Southwest.
In summer the warmest water temperature is 16 degrees, so we recommend wearing a 3/2. Winter requires some thicker rubber in the form of a 4/3 with water temperatures dropping to a chilly 12 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
