Located just off of Long Island in New York, Fire Island is a barrier island ringed with sandy beaches that offer up great beach break waves. The coast here is about 30 miles long, offering up hollow and powerful waves that break for up to 100 meters. Bring a 4WD to explore the numerous breaks and waves along this beach.
What are the best surf conditions for Fire Island?
Gets good from waist high to triple overhead. We recommend riding your longboard when smaller and your shortboard when bigger. Fire Island is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and hardly ever crowded (3/10). The best swell direction is from the East, South, and Southeast. Offshore winds depend on which part of the island you are on, but Northwest is usually a good bet. Different parts work on different tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini in the summer when water temperatures rise to 23 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 hooded wetsuit with booties and gloves is recommended for the 4-degree water. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
