Located in Northern Maine, Popham Beach is a quality beach break that rolls over a sand bottom. The waves here can be a bit tricky to surf and break for up to 50 meters providing some fun sections for manoeuvres. Needs a big swell to be good, otherwise great for beginners.
What are the best surf conditions for Popham Beach?
Gets good from waist-high to overhead. A longboard will work here most days and a shortboard is the move when the size picks up. This beach is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The surf here sometimes has a wave (4/10) and is generally uncrowded (3/10). The best winds are from the Northwest. The best swells are from the South or Southwest. Best on mid to high tides.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 18 degrees. In winter the water plunges to 3 degrees necessitating a 5/4 wetsuit. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
