Located in the Mentawais, West Sumatra, Indonesia, Thunders is a quality left hand reef break that offers up a heavy wave for the charges at size, and manageable walls and barrels for mortals when smaller. The waves here require you to be on your A-Game to surf and break for up to 150 meters over a large coral reef. There are a couple different sections which have different moods depending on the swell. Racing barrels at the top, then a performance wall, the another barrel section on the inside is the norm. Shifting peaks seem to come out of nowhere, especially at size.
What are the best surf conditions for Thunders?
Gets good between waist high and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard, then step up, then gun as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here is super consistent, an absolute swell magnet (9/10) and will get busy when the swell is small as all the charters will come here (5/10). The best winds are from the North or Northwest. The best swells are from the Southwest and West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year round. Water temperatures fluctuate between 29 and 25 here year round. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
