Located in the Mentawais, West Sumatra, Indonesia, HT’s/Lance’s Right is a world class right hand reef break that should be at the top of any natural footer’s bucket list. When on it is perfect and starts with a not super critical take off that leads into a pedal to the metal barrel section. On the inside the reef is called the “Surgeon’s Table” and for good reason. It is sharp and shallow, ready to cut open anyone that doesn’t make the tube or mistimes the paddle back out. On more Southerly swells the wave tends to section a bit more, splitting the outside and inside. On these types of swells performance walls will be mixed into the barrel sections.
What are the best surf conditions for HT’s/Lance’s Right?
Gets good between overhead and triple overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will usually have a bit of a crew on it (6/10). The best winds are form the West. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on all tides but mid to high lessens the reef cut risk.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year round. Water temperatures range from 29 to 25 year round. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
