One of the Mentawais finest and most beautiful waves is “Telescopes.”
Telescopes is a longer than average, semi-hollow, world-class, wrapping left. Many surfers call Telescopes one of their favorite waves in Indonesia. Rides can trade off between racy walls to steady tube sections to rippable shoulders for 200 yards.
When it is smaller it is great for intermediate surfers. Compared to some other spots in the Mentawais, Telescopes is not super fast or critical. The flat bottom makes for a relatively safe wave. However, on bigger swells, it can get heavy and shallow.
Telescopes is truly flawless and elegant to witness and surf. It’s the type of wave that makes an ordinary surfer feel like a radical pro.
Telescopes is an exposed reef break with the most consistent swells in the Dry Season from May-Oct. The perfect wind direction is from the East. Well groomed groundswells arrive preferably from the southwest. The waves start working for a fun 2 foot. From there with every increasing foot, get’s better and more perfect When it’s on, it can get crowded. Best on a mid tide, with a bit of westerly direction in the swell.
