Located in the Mentawais, Indonesia, West Sumatra, Hideaways is an excellent reef break that offers up a ledgy lefthand barrel. The waves here are generally heavy and break for up to 100 meters over a coral reef. Some refer to this spot as the Mentawais Pipeline, a comparison that almost seems fair to make on the best day at Hideaways. It lacks the power or size that Pipeline does. Still, a good barrel awaits. When it isn’t so good here, a wall fit for carving will be the norm.
What are the best surf conditions for Hideaways?
Gets good between head high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard then step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced level surfers. The surf here is pretty consistent (6/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best wind is no wind, but Easterlies will work. The best swells are from the Southwest and West. Needs a mid to high tide, at lows there is too much dry reef.
We recommend wearing boardshorts or a bikini year round. Water temperatures range from 29 to 25 year round. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
