Located on the Inner Hebrides, Scotland, The Maze is a good reef break that provides deep hollow pits when the conditions line up. The waves here are pretty heavy and break for up to 50 meters over a rock bottom. This is a bit of a slab, those with a good sense of self-preservation might stick to the beach break on the inside.
What are the best surf conditions for The Maze?
Gets good between head high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard or a step-up depending on the size. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here usually is breaking (5/10) and will generally be uncrowded (4/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the Northwest, Southwest, and West. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a 4/3 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 14 degrees. In the winter a 5/4 is best when water temperatures drop to 9 degrees. See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
