Three Bears is an incredibly good surf location, comprising of three waves – Papa’s, Mama’s, and Babies. Bears is a consistent reef break, that holds small to moderate size swells. It’s a popular location that requires a bit more effort than usual to get to. Bears is the pride and joy of many a Dunsborough surfer, plenty of guys own 4×4’s simply to get to this break. You do require a real 4×4 to get to Bears an old Corolla even if it’s driven like a rally car probably won’t get you there.
To get to Bears head down Sugarloaf Road, then make another left. There’s a lot of soft sand at the start of the track, followed by some big rocks and ledges. Bear’s is best at three to six-foot (head high to double overhead). It does hold bigger surf, however at eight-foot plus it doesn’t resemble the classic Bear’s line up that makes this place so popular. Papa’s is the southernmost section, and this is where the swell is biggest. It’s a shifty left-hander that tends to break in sections rather than peel. A good place to escape the crowds. Mama’s is in the middle, it’s a steep and hollow wave. Surfers take off side-by-side and splitting the peak. The left and right both barrel, but also allow for big turns. Baby’s at the northern end is a tamer version of Mama’s. It’s not as vertical on the take-off and walls up more than it barrels. Bear’s is the kind of place you never get tired of surfing. It’s a quality break located on a beautiful piece of the West Oz coastline.
