Located on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Crayfish Reef is a fun reef break that throws out some big left-hand barrels. You’ll need to take a decently long paddle through massive kelp gardens to get here, but it can be well worth the effort. The waves here are heavy and break for up to 150 meters (492 feet) over a rocky bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Crayfish Reef?
Crayfish Reef gets good between chest high and double overhead. We recommend riding a shortboard and then a step up as the size picks up. This break is suitable for intermediate and advanced-level surfers. The surf here is somewhat consistent (6/10) and will get busy at peak times (5/10). The best winds are from the East. The best swells are from the West. It works best on a mid to low tide for barrels.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19°C (66°F). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temperatures drop to 15°C (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
