Located on the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Big Bay is a fun stretch of beach break that offers up some rippable walls often. The waves here require a bit of skill to surf and break for up to 100 meters (328 feet) over a sand bottom.
What are the best surf conditions for Big Bay?
Big Bay gets good between waist-high (approximately 1.2 meters / 4 feet) and double overhead (approximately 3.7 meters / 12 feet). We recommend riding a longboard if small and a shortboard, then step up as the size picks up. This break is good for all levels of surfer. The surf here is consistent (7/10) and will get busy on weekends (5/10). The best winds are from the Northeast. The best swells are from the South and Southwest. Works on all tides.
We recommend wearing a 3/2 in the summer when water temperatures rise to 19 degrees Celsius (66°F). In winter, a 4/3 is best when temps drop to 15 degrees Celsius (59°F). See the temperature chart below for more data on this.
