URBNSURF Melbourne is Australia’s first publicly open wave pool. It is widely considered the best wave pool currently open in Australia, and offers everything that one has come to expect with modern wave pools. There is both a right and a left, serving up ankle to around head high waves based on the skill level of the surfers in the water. The pools (one for the right and one for the left) are shaped like acute triangles, with the take off zone right at the smaller point of the triangle. This can lead to a little uneasiness, so watch out! The pool pumps out about 900 to 1000 waves an hour, which seems like a lot because it is. In an hour long session, if it is fully booked, you’ll be looking at about 10-12 rides. The bottom of the pool is concrete, be careful when you fall. Many have said that similar to Waco, it can be a small but cuppy wave, so make sure to bring a shorter/fatter board to better fit into the pocket.
The pools are both oriented facing the Northeast, so look for that wind for offshore conditions. Temps tend to be chilly, so bring a 4/3 and even booties during the winter months! Luckily there are hot tubs and warm cafes ready to serve you up something warm when you get out of your session.
Hourly rates are fairly priced here. They range from 89 AUS to around 150 AUS for expert sessions. There are also memberships available which bring down the price per session significantly.
