Shizunami Surf Stadium is a unique wavepool for a variety of reasons. The first is that it is a stone’s throw away from a highly popular surfing beach on the Pacific Ocean in the center of a bustling surf town. Secondly, it is powered by the most updated version of “Perfectswell” technology. This tech was made famous at Waco, but the updated version allows for more wave variety and power. This wavepool offers an “arena-like” experience with large grandstands on one side. The founder wishes it to be the future in surfing competition. The waves here can be turned up or down like most wavepools, which offer good surf for all levels of surfer. It could be ankle high rollers or headish high slabs. The waves can be turned for both lefts and rights, so bring all your differently footed friends for all kinds of action. The waves break for a standard 50-100 meters.
This wavepool is open to the public, although only members can buy tickets to the pool at this time. Membership fees can be a bit pricey but it is doable. Per hour costs then come out to 70-80 USD. The waves are pumped out at an impressive 100 per hour, so your session will definitely be a shoulder burner. The pool is popular year round, and you’ll probably need a 3/2 to stay comfortable in the winter, but boardshorts or bikinis in the summer could hold you over. There are also a few restaurants and bars inside the arena, a perfect spot to relax inbetween sessions.
Other things to do in the small town include eating some of the best sushi around, surfing but in the ocean, and exploring the beautiful coastline of Japan. That being said, it is a quick bullet train to Tokyo if that’s more your speed.
